Father, Grandfather, Teacher, Brother, and Friend….James C. Douglas, 78 of Valparaiso, passed away Sunday, November 5, 2017 at his home. He was born October 19, 1939 in Gary, the son of Edgar C. and Florence G. (Welch) Douglas. Jim retired in 2007 after 45 years of teaching at Portage Township Schools and Indiana University. Never at a loss for a story or sharing a fact, his passion for learning and helping others were the core of his character. He was proceeded in death by his wife of 47 years on July 24, 2009, Elizabeth A. Douglas (Messman). He is survived by his two daughters, Lisa (Bob) Filipek and Michelle (Jeff) Kerr; four grandchildren, Sara, Doug, Alexandra, and William; brother, Bill (Judy) Douglas of San Antonio, FL; brother-in-law Bob (Diana) Messman of New Haven, IN; nephew Jason Messman and niece Lynnette Hill. Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2017 from 8-10am at Bartholomew Funeral Home, 102 Monroe Street, Valparaiso. Private grave site services to take place at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice in his name.
