Mary Ellen Evers, 96 of Valparaiso, passed away, Sunday, October 23, 2016. She was born March 8, 1920 in Hanna, Indiana the daughter of Calvin and Eva Louise (Bales) Thomas. Mary was a homemaker, attended St. John’s United Church in Chesterton, and was a former member of the String Along Quilt Guild and the Merrillville Historical Society. On February 17, 1939 she married Richard R. Evers, who preceded her in death. Surviving are her children, Sharon F. (Kenneth) Passe, of Valparaiso, Joyce L. Pomo, of Ashville, N.C., Linda L. (Carl) Anderson of Crown Point, Richard R. (Debra) Evers of Valparaiso and Kae E. Kambol, of Peterborough, N.H., 11 grandchildren, John Ashton, Jennifer Newbrough (Tim), David Passe (step grandson), Jacqueline True (Todd), Kathleen VanderSpek (Paul), Elizabeth Kindred, Patricia Gray (Spencer Noland) Richard R. Evers III (Amanda), Shannon Ferrell (Frank), Virginia Morgan and Audrey Kambol, 11 great great-grandchildren Keith Ashton, Kirstie Ashton, Elara Newbrough, Jake Newbrough, Ryan True, Anneke VanderSpek, Rogan VanderSpek, Lucille Kindred, Aria Kindred, Isabelle Evers and Hazel Jorgenson and her sister Lucille Finch of Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, brother Charles Thomas and sisters Dorothy I. Thomas, Ruth Kelly, G. Louise Gong and Frances Larsen. Visitation will be held Friday, October 28, 2016, 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at St. John’s United Church, 225 W. Lincoln Avenue, Chesterton, IN. 46304. Funeral Services will be Friday, at 11:30 AM at the church with Pastor Aaron Ban officiating. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to Westchester Meals, 225 W. Lincoln, Chesterton, IN 46304.
