Herbert Francis Abramson, age 90, of Crown Point, Indiana, passed away on February 6th, 2021. He was born December 16, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois, to Maurice and Rose Abramson. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Arnold and sister Betty.
Herbert grew up in Hammond, Indiana, and graduated from Hammond High School in 1949. He studied education and business administration at Indiana University before being drafted in the US Army and stationed in Alaska. On his return to Indiana, he earned his master’s degree from the University of Chicago, Loyola.
In recognition of his work as an outstanding educator he received the Sagamores of the Wabash, the highest honor Indiana could give to acknowledge achievement or civic contributions, from the Governor of Indiana, December 6th,1991.
Herbert married Sylvia Linde in June of 1958 and had three daughters. Herbert and Sylvia were long time members of Temple Israel Synagogue in Gary, Indiana, where he had his Bar Mitzvah at age 65. Currently they are members of Temple Israel in Valparaiso, IN.
He taught high school history at Lake Ridge High School in Gary, Indiana, and could spend hours talking about historical events, which was his favorite subject. From there he was the Principal of Lake Ridge Jr. High, and then Superintendent for the Lake Ridge School District in Gary, Indiana. After retiring, Herbert enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, often regaling them with stories of his childhood. He had an extensive library and spent many hours reading.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia, his daughters Marcia Harris (David), Jackie Schultz (Steven), and Rachel Kruzic. He has two grandchildren, Samuel Schultz, and Sydney Kruzic.
