Herbert Douglas Manago, 83, of Valparaiso, passed away Friday, October 5, 2018 in Valparaiso. He was born August 1, 1935 in Valparaiso to Joseph and Rose (Napoli) Manago. On October 26, 1957 he married Margaret “Peggie” Phares who survives. Also surviving him are his children Antoinette “Toni” (Dennis) Leek of Wanatah, Teresa Wittenstrom of Valparaiso, Herbert M. Manago of Valparaiso, and Michael (Jane) Witkowski of Kouts, eight grandchildren, several great grandchildren and one great-great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 brothers and sisters. Herb was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Valparaiso, the Knights of Columbus Council #738 Fourth Degree, and was a Valparaiso Fireman for seven years prior to going to work at Bethlehem Steel where he was a fireman for 33 years. He was a U.S. Marine veteran. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 11th at St. Paul Catholic Church, 1855 W. Harrison Blvd. Rev. Douglas Mayer will officiate. Burial will be in Kimball Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 PM on Wednesday at Bartholomew Funeral Home, 102 Monroe St. in Valparaiso and at the church on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of mass. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Leukemia Foundation.
