John M Angyus

July 7, 1930 ~ August 5, 2023 (age 93) 93 Years Old

Obituary

John M. Angyus passed away peacefully in his home in Valparaiso, IN on August 5, 2023, surrounded by four generations of his loving family. John (93) was born on July 7, 1930 in East Chicago, IN to John and Anna (Schaller) Angyus. He attended St. Mary’s Elementary School (East Chicago, IN), Bishop Noll High School (Hammond, IN), Purdue University for his Bachelors and Masters in Education (West Lafayette and Hammond, IN). John was active at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in organizing Helping Hands, member of the Men’s Club and served many years as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. He was also a committed Cursillista and active in the Third Order of St. Francis.

John’s character was a dynamic entanglement of toughness and love. He was a star running back on the football team at Bishop Noll and went on to play for one year at Purdue University in West Lafayette. He then moved back to Hammond to marry his high school sweetheart, Dolores Kulik on May 10, 1952. Together they raised five children in North Hammond where they were active members of St. Casimir’s Parish. John worked at American Steel Foundries for 23 years as a machinist tool and die maker. When the plant closed down he returned to school to get his Masters degree in Education. He then taught machine trades at Valparaiso High School for 13 years.

John was a devoted husband of 66 years, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Every Sunday, John would line up his five children to attend mass, joyfully singing the final hymn during the walk home. He took his family on many vacations, often to lake cabins where they could fish and play games. It was in these environments he could best teach his children by word and example to “love one another.” Smoking black and mild cigars and maintaining a joking sense of humor up until the end, John embodied a sturdy but warm hearted role model for all who were blessed to know him.

John is survived by children, Mary (Mark McLaughlin) of Hammond, IN, John (Melissa Nelson) Angyus of Highland, IN, Vicky (Stephen “Redtail” Rickard) of Victor, MT, Joe (Laura Jakush) Angyus of Portland, OR; grandchildren: Emily (Mark Panning), John, Erik (Lindsay Taggart) Meggan (Nevin Neagu) Sara, Laura Beth (Matt Carnes) Catherine, Joey and Michael; great grandchildren: Elsa, Lillian, Kurtis, Kealan, Alexandra and Zara. He was preceded in death by his daughter Cathy and his wife Dolores.
